Caring for care leavers in Custody

The course provides participants with an opportunity to refresh and extend their knowledge, skills and confidence in understanding and meeting the needs of care experienced people whilst they are in custody.
The training is delivered by a care experienced trainer who will share their personal testimony regarding their journey through care into prison and beyond. |

Course Objectives
- Develop an understanding of what a ‘looked after child’ is and why children enter the care system
- Increase understanding of the internal and external factors impacting those with ‘lived experience’ of care, leaving care and custody
- For participants to reflect on their own connections and experiences of leaving home
- Understand the needs of young people as they prepare for adulthood and leaving care
- Increase understanding of why care leavers are overpopulated in prison and probation
- Develop and share understanding on how to support young people as they prepare for their transition from custody to community
- Understand the legal rights and entitlements of care leavers
